place of generic support for the development of the
instrumentation engineering activities implied within the project,
duties
normally covered by the Project
I&C Leader
position were carried out: this is occurred due to repeated changes of
the project
task force arranged by the Client and its operational needs.
Due to such reasons, since the early stage of the project,
all duties and activities normally implied by that position have been
carried out, of course, at the Client's premises.
Scheduled meetings with the Final
Customer (team of resident engineer), check of work
progress, and resource management (with
a partial outsourcing) with
the I&C Leader, coordination with the Project Manager,
and regular interdisciplinary meetings and planning for the incoming
activities, are just some of the tasks performed.
In addition to mentioned project management, however, it
have also
been proceeded with the operational development of several
project documents (e.g. Specification
Technique du Système de l'Instrumentation, Specification Technique pour
l'Instrumentation des Units Package, Specification
Technique du Comptage Multi-Phase de Debit (MPFM), etc.),
as well as to attend to numerous meetings with the Vendors for the
supply of the different plant packages, as also the technical
evaluation and the kick-off meeting for some of them.
In a second project phase, only after an almost complete performing of
the field instrumentation tasks and duties, it has been required to
also cover the control room side aspects, due to a new and changed arrangement of the
Client's project task force.

Such project developments activities

documents, in order to incorporate comments originated both by

as also under the internal company review.
Significant contributions have been offered for the
preparation, for example, of the relevant documents like the General
Specfication for
Instrumentation (as also for the Packaged Instrumentation), while for others documents like multiphase
flow meter (MPFM) data sheet, pneumatic and pneumo-hydraulic valves
command layouts typical, these have been developed as brand new
documents. |

Management and resolution of a Punch
List, essential to achieve the minimal optimal conditions

Such large activity took place over several months, and have been

Activity Description |
During
such time period, similar and repeated activities have been performed,
but even if these may appears as less relevant, due the repeated presence of PLC programming,
these
may still offer interesting evaluation aspects, either for the
related PLC specific configuration or for the customized PLC
software development. For some of mentioned PLC
based
solutions, the functional verification or complete start-up
and
commissioning have been performed, including some foreign locations.
Within the most significative activities the following are
listed:

Drying desulphurisation beds
automatic alternate regeneration: PLC
configuration design and development of related automation
and control software.

Recycled plastic storage and
granulation plant for the production of different thickness films:
on-site support and optimization of PLC software.

Automatic blooms (coming
out from the casting section)
de-scaling system: PLC configuration design and development of
related automation and control software.

Smoke abatement system for
particulate reduction (fume hoods on pouring ladles
and blast furnace): development of related PLC software and
subsequent start-up and commissioning.

Fertilizer (urea) production
plant:
development of part of the handling software, including functional
tests with the Client and the preparation of the operator
manuals
in English.

Automatic drawing machine for
steel wire strand to be used for tires manufacturing: PLC configuration design and development of related automationand control
software,
inclusive of significant features for self-diagnostic and
faults/anomalies report (external auxiliary display driven directly by
PLCs 'digital outputs as HMI).

Automation and control related
to physical and chemical processing of steel strand coating treatments (steel
strand to be used for tires manufacturing):
PLC configuration design and development of
related automation and control software.
Considerable presence of several analog signals.

Pipes binding machine automation
(drill rods packaging),
by various packaging sizes and shapes (as different combinations of
pipes), by different pipe diameters: development of the related automation and
control software,
characterized by a significant complexity, both for positioning on axes
(by encoders and "optical" rulers),
comparable to a CNC
(for the pipes binding and positioning head), and
for the coordination of packaged lots (by a RS232 comunication), with a
remote PC supervisor, and at last, to verify the packed
lot weight
(by a weighing station integrated into the pipes binding machine).

Activities as PLC site support
engineer have been performed, in supporting the site software project leader.
The PLC control architecture oversaw a complex and innovative concept
of continuous casting (conticaster),
characterized by the presence of magnetic stirres in molds
(interchangeable, by various sizes), by in line oxyacetylene cutting
system (operating during the bloom casting), coordinated with a
90° tipper, in order to avoid the usual "curvature" of the
casted blooms (often considered as detrimental for the final metal
cristalline structure quality). In addition to the usual communication
PLC cards with the factory supervisor (host), the above solution also
includes several further PLC cards for encoder readings, motion
control, etc. |

Activity Description |
To better understand activities implied by
present item, and although it is chronologically later, it is
recommendeed the prior reading of the further below listed item.
In fact, the design criteria for the Turkish section of the pipeline,
essentially was correspondent to what have been developed for the
parallel pipeline section located in Iraq, and as it have been
for such section, also for the Turkish side, were needed significative
modifications.
Consequently, with the aim to achieve a reasonable design uniformity
and a similar management philosophy for both pipeline sides, and with
the implied agrement of the two pipeline owner bodies (Botas and Scop),
a close cooperation with the Turkish side PLC site engineer have been
perfomed, in making sure that such requirements have been faced and met
in full. |

Activity Description |
Following to a reasonable time period of project introduction
held at the Client
headquarters of Marcallo,
it have been reached the
installation site as software leader, where, in accordance to the
original plans, were to be aquitted for the set-up and commissioning
activities related to the software of different PLC (installed in each
pipeline pumping station), and the verification of the proper
communication with the tankfarm
supervisor. It was in fact possible to control the whole pipeline by
the remote RTU.
In the reality, a Final
Customer virtually "militarized" and thus more
intransigent (in those years, Iraq was engaged in a war with Iran, and
among other things, the pipeline was considered as a military
target), the poor and inadequate availability of documents related the
existing
plant sections (often never updated "as built"), and at
last, initial surveys performed not enough deeply, led to numerous and
substantial design changes to software performed at the End Customer's
plant (field),
moreover, to be agreed, one by one with the End Customer, by
mean of repeated meetings performed on site, sometimes in presence of
the Main Contractor's
officials.
Furthermore, in terms of commissioning and testing of such agreed
operational sequences, shut down of such lucrative plant was to
be completely avoided, so these tests were possible only in
manual and/or semiautomatic modes (often with the isolation of the
field actuation device and/or the feedback to remote control system),
or either during scheduled or unexpected plant stops, both for total or
partial pumping station sections (e.g. launching and receiving pig
traps).
